Green Schools Programme
The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is a public interest research and advocacy organisation based in New Delhi. CSE researches into, lobbies for and communicates the urgency of development that is both sustainable and equitable. It also works at the grassroots level with schools – both teachers and students to raise awareness about the environment through the Green Schools Programme. Global Public School has been a proud participant in the Green Schools Programme Audits since 2017
What is a Green School?
A Green School is a resource-efficient school that meets most of the criteria given below:
Window Floor Ratio (WFR) more than 15 per cent
Maximum use of energy efficient lighting to conserve energy and use of alternative sources of energy. GSP Audit encourages schools to minimise use of conventional lights without compromising sufficient lighting for students
Maintain a high green cover inside and around school campus along with greater biodiversity by planting native species of plants
Serve only cooked meals (or avoid packaged foods that are high in Fats, Sugar and Salt) to ensure healthy food consumption
- Harvest rainwater through Rainwater Harvesting (RWH) systems and reuse treated wastewater. Waste water can be treated at school level (decentralised wastewater treatment system) or at centralized Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs)
Pre and Post monsoon cleaning of RWH systems is important
Segregate waste at source efficiently and dispose responsibly. Recycling at least 90 per cent of the waste is recommended
Wet waste to be composted
Waste not to be burned
Global Public School (GPS) has once again reaffirmed its position as a national leader in sustainability by securing the prestigious ‘GREEN’ rating at the Green School Awards 2025–26 conducted by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE).
Out of 7,407 schools assessed across India, GPS emerged among an elite 6 per cent to receive the coveted top-tier rating. This marks the fourth consecutive year that the school has achieved this honour, reflecting its consistent commitment to environmental stewardship and its vision of sustaining a carbon-neutral campus.
The recognition followed a rigorous, student-led audit under the Green Schools Programme (GSP), which evaluated the school’s environmental performance across six key areas — Air, Energy, Food, Land, Water, and Waste. The CSE jury commended GPS for its impactful sustainability initiatives, including extensive reliance on solar energy, the operation of a Bio-gas (B80) plant, and a strong culture of “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.” By directly involving students in the auditing process, the school transforms sustainability into a hands-on, real-world learning experience.
At the awards ceremony held in New Delhi, Sunita Narain, Director General of CSE, noted that while the national average of ‘Green’ rated schools has risen to 6 per cent this year, consistent performers like GPS set the benchmark for institutional responsibility. Through integrated sustainable practices and responsible resource management, Global Public School continues to demonstrate how educational institutions can lead meaningful ecological change, extending their positive impact beyond the campus and into the wider community.
