Genetics in real life

The Biology students of Grade 11 & 12 had an interactive session on “Genetics in real life” with Dr. Vijai Joseph (Associate Professor at Weill Cornell Medical College, NYC)  on November 15th to help enrich their temperament towards scientific enquiry and appreciate the role of genetics in their lives.

Dr. Joseph enlightened the children on population genetics and the role of genetics in their everyday lives. He encouraged them to question the unknown and to develop an enquiry based approach to everything they learn.

The Bio-Discovery Program which was conducted by the Unibiosys labs on the next two days, gave them hands on experience on the use of modern apparatus and various techniques in biotechnology- like DNA extraction,  Gel electrophoresis , DNA fingerprinting and Polymerase chain reaction as well as the use of Bioinformatics to analyze large biological data for easy comparison and study.
