“Cancer may have started the fight, but I will finish it.” That’s the spirit inculcated by every cancer survivor.
Students of grade 9 and 10 took part in an interactive and informative session on cancer when renowned Oncologist, Dr. V.P Gangadharan graced us with his presence on 8th December 2015.
The session began on a positive note with Dr. Gangadharan emphasizing that cancer is curable, especially in children who have an 80% survival rate. The three stages in cancer, treatment plans as well as the working of cancer cells were explained in depth to provide the students with a better understanding of the affliction. A presentation featuring the various statistics of cancer ailment in Kerala as well as its main causes such as changing lifestyles, exposure to chemicals/radiation, use of tobacco etc, was shown to the students. The importance of prevention and early detection was stressed upon by the eminent doctor. The teachers and students were advised to perform regular self-examinations, ultra sounds, vaccinations and mammography whenever relevant.
The interactive session saw a lot of students actively involved and clearing their misconceptions about cancer and its treatment. Dr. Gangadharan’s session was highly appreciated by both the faculty and student body who took back with them a greater awareness about this mounting malady and ways to safeguard their near and dear ones
