STEM Workshop at Bangalore
David Tony Veliath (Grade 8) and Vishnu Elachi (Grade 6) were among the 50 students selected out of the 1500 entrees from across 35 schools to participate in the workshop organized by the STEM program under Fitkids Education and Training at the Parikrma Centre for Learning, Bangalore in December 2016. The Theme for the workshop was “Pollution in the Neighbourhood” and the students worked for a month on a real time project, which aimed to measure pollution in their neighbourhood. David and Vishnu started their research by observing a bad smell emanating from a waste processing plant and discovered the harmful effects of Hydrogen Sulfide ( even in low quantities) present in the gases being released by the plant. They devised a gas sensor to detect the presence of Hydrogen Sulfide gas in the surrounding. Both of them have qualified for the next round after which if they are selected, they will be groomed over the next 3 years by the core team to help them excel at international science fairs like Google Science Fair (GSF) and Intel Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).
